You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go.

Not here. Not there.

When people look at me they see a girl with brown skin, black hair and dark brown eyes. I am quickly identified as Mexican and/or Latina. This label is part of my identity, but it does not define who I am. To many people in this country I am not fully American though I was born here. I am not the belonging of this melting pot. In fact I am said to not work as hard, not be as smart, or as pretty as any of my other competitors. Thankfully, not everyone is this way, but there are many that look down upon me because of my race. This does not discourage me, but only motivates me to pursue a higher education.

When people look at me they see a girl with brown skin, black hair and dark brown eyes. I am quickly identified as American, “guerita” meaning blondie, or “de alla” from over there. To the native born Mexican I will never be fully Mexican. I will always be looked at as a visitor and not a native. I will always be looked at as arrogant, vain, and rich because I happen to be born in the United States Of America. Again, thankfully not all people see me in this way but there is a handful that still do.

When people look at me they see a girl with brown skin, black hair and dark brown eyes. I am not Mexican and I am not American. I do not belong here and I do not belong there. When I see myself I see a hard working, motivated, persistent, determined and compassionate human being. I see myself as a citizen of the world. I find it unfair that I have to label myself. I find it unfair that others have to label me.
As human beings we are all labeled. We are labeled depending on our ethnicity, religion, political party, etc. We are obsessed with labeling! We have been taught to label ourselves and others since we entered school. This is why here in the United States I am labeled as Mexican and everything that comes along with that name. This is also why to the native Mexican I will always be American, a “gringa” as they may put it. We don’t know any better but to label others.

Being the person that I am I feel like everyone should have an opportunity to prove who they are. Usually this process is a life-time process, but it is cut short because of labeling. I would like people to pay attention to who I am and not what label I identify myself with. Before even noticing this pattern I was just being myself. After I noticed nothing changed. Sure, I have came to the conclusion that I will never be fully accepted in either place or by either people, but I am just fine with that. I am more aware of my surroundings, but I am definitely still the same. I work hard in everything I do every single day. I do not tolerate discrimination. I speak what I believe and respect what I do not. I love being Mexican and American. I love being a citizen of the world and of the human race.

2. What do these questions tell you about the AP exam? What do you need to "see" when you read a passage?
When I took the AP English Language test last year I was frightened by how many questions there was on literary terms. I did not know many and the few ones I knew were not ones I had mastered. These questions tell me that I will have to quickly analyze the tone diction of what I am reading. I do not really have to know the content I just have to understand how it is being presented. When I read a passage I need to be able to see and identify the tone, a comparison and/or transition.

 c) Explain what the questions tell you about the skills/content you need to master for the AP exam.
These questions tell me that I am going to have to work on being able to identify literary terms in the content given to me. I am going to have to be able to know the Literary terms very well in order to answer the questions quickly and correct. I also need to focus as I am reading so I will not have to spend time re-reading the passage over and over.

HACKING MY EDUCATION

1. What do I want to know in June that I don’t know today?
I want to know how to help myself and others practice compassion. I want to be able to trust my gut and be confident. My main goal is to become a better person. Everyday is a new day. I do not know what everyday will bring, but I do know that my reaction will be different every time. I want to be able to live a conscious life day in and day out.

2. What skills do I want to be able to demonstrate through my blog or on the media?
My blog is a piece of who I am. There are quotes, personal thoughts, poems, interesting articles, and my assignments and insights. This semester I plan to publish more post on articles that interest me, quotes, and anything motivational. I want my blog to be as close of an image of me as possible. I want it to portray my hard work, simplicity and passions. I want people to see what I am capable of.

3. What experiences do I want to have as a result?
The experiences that are the most memorable from this course and my life are the ones spent with other people. Collaborating and spending time with others are experiences I want to have more of. As a result I want people to look at my blog, and give me their insight on my post. I want to know what they think about some of the articles I am interested in. I want to hear their opinions and their point of view whether it be the same or different as mine.

4. Who do I need in my network?
(Peers, public, experts)
The network of people I collaborate with are some of the most focused and intelligent people I know. They are on the same boat as I. My peers are my close friends who all happen to be in A.V.I.D. Upward Bound is also a network that I keep close because it has continued to helped me throughout the years. The public is very important to me, because they do not know who I am so they are limited to what they see in my work and the media. People like counselors and acquaintances are always a good public because they are willing to edit any papers and tell you if they do not understand what your point was. They are clear and to the point. The experts to get me to where I want to be are in front of me every single day. My teachers Mr. LeClair, Mrs. Byrne and Dr. Preston have all showed me through their actions to be curious, confident, compassionate, and kind. I have a great advantage because I see them everyday and I can ask them for advice.

What's In This For Me?

My goal this semester is be satisfied and confident with my work. I also plan on practicing being curious and asking questions.

I have always wondered why people are so interested in pleasing others and fitting in to the world we live in. Deep down I have always known the answer. We all know. I am a very hard worker and my effort and persistence is what keeps me going. I have such high expectations of myself that many of the times I do not realize how worthy my work is or how worthy it can become.

Steve Jobs said,

"Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up of people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use." Before I entered this course I did not really think much of asking questions. I was curious, but not curious enough to ask. This course has made me realize that I can play with what I have, I can collaborate, I can change the game. My goal this semester is to keep being curious. To ask questions and to learn from others.
